EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
